A member of the Hanbali jurisprudence school founded by Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and a polarising figure in his own lifetime, the iconoclastic views of Ibn Taymiyyah on commonly accepted Sunni doctrines such as the veneration of saints and the visitation of their tomb-shrines made him unpopular with most of the Orthodox religious scholars of the time, under whose orders he was imprisoned many times.
